This past month has been so much fun! We have done tie dye, and started painting shoes! With these shoes I have created original art in that I came up with my design and color scheme by myself! The whole creative process with the shoes was so much fun! We definitely went through some learning curves, in getting the hang of how the paint works on the shoe but once we did we have been having so much fun expressing ourselves through these shoes! I also took a risk in the shoes with the design, I wasn't sure how it was going to turn out but I ended up really liking it!
Throughout the course of this year and last year I have really gotten to know and learn how to express all of the artistic behaviors. My favorite unit this year was painting the shoes! It was something I had never done before and it was so cool to try! My least favorite unit was the portrait. Portrait's have a learning curve to them and I have definitely not learned it yet so the unit was overall really frustrating for me. Even though this was my least favorite unit, I think I grew the most from it. Being required to keep trying, and keep pushing I was forced to keep practicing portraits and ultimately learned a lot. I know this sounds cheesy, but I honestly wouldn't change any aspect of this class! I loved it. An aspect that I really liked and would keep is the freedom that this class gives you to practice whichever art skill you want. The piece of artwork that I am most proud of this year was an acrylic mandala painting, I worked really hard and spent a while sketching it all out before painting and it really payed off.

Throughout the month of May we have been working hard on our tape murals! We all collaborated and decided to each split up and make a different landscape. Steph and I worked on the mountains. We begun with the standard blue tape and then slowly kept adding different colors to try and create dimension. We decided on pink as an accent color! We also created original art this month with our unique geometric mountain designs. I always look forward to seeing the hallways taped and I'm so excited we got to participate in it this year :)
During the month of March I have been doing a lot of different little projects. One long block we decided to try paint pouring! We all took a risk by trying this new technique and I love how it turned out! It was a really fun way to try something different and it was a really relaxed fun way to make art! After that we started embroidery and I have been developing skills! I really enjoyed doing embroidery last year and this year I have been building off of my skills from last year. Right now I am working on a landscape piece.
This month we have been working on a portrait unit! We were tasked with creating a unique and creative portrait that expresses a purpose. I wanted to do something different than the typical acrylic paintings that I have been working on so far this year so I decided to make the background a newspaper collage. I cut out a bunch of different size pieces of newspaper and then macheed it onto the paper. When it came to the actual person I have in my picture, I wanted my artwork to be different from all of the other portraits in the room so I did a silhouette! Someone actually gave me this idea during a critique! During critiques we were collaborating about our artwork. Another artistic behavior I used this month was creating original art. Typically I have a reference image, but for this project I went completely on my own, and I’m really happy with how it turned out!
Over the last two weeks we have been working on a boundary project. The assignment was to create a piece of art that incorporated boundaries and it could be interpreted any way the artist wanted, I interpreted it more literally and decided to paint the interior of a beach house looking out to the beach through a row of windows. (I am not done yet!!) I took a lot of risks in this painting, one of the biggest being the attempt I made to make the seat cushions, as of right now I am really unhappy with how that turned out, so I have to go back in and fix that, as I plan to keep adding to this piece and developing it more. I also collaborated a lot with my peers during this project, asking about colors and for their advice a lot. I really liked being assigned something so broad and getting to take our own interpretation of it! It is really fun to see everyone's different pieces! Overall I really liked this assignment, I just don't like my painting that much right now, I need to go back and develop it more.
Lately I have been doing a variety of different styles of art and I love it! One of my favorite things that we did this month is batiking. This is where you use hot wax, dye, and a piece of cloth to make pieces of art. My favorite batik that I did is the one with the anchor, I really like how the colors work together. The other flower batik was the first one I attempted, and it is not as good. I was still practicing the necessary techniques. In the anchor batik I took a risk by doing the background sort of tie dyed with the two different colors. I was afraid that this might end up looking like a tie dye gone wrong but in the end I like how it ended up turning out and I am happy I did it. By doing more than one batik, I was also developing skill. This was proven in the better quality of the second batik compared to the first. This month I also did another acrylic painting, and it was so much fun! I love the whimsical aspect of the santa painting, and it fits in perfect with Christmas! I also was experimenting with some Christmas watercolors. I made a bunch of different style of trees and had fun doing it!
Throughout November, I have been doing a lot of acrylic canvas painting and I love it! My favorite piece that I have done is the gold mandala on the black canvas. For this painting I created original art. There is no other mandala that would look exactly like mine because I made it unique to what I envisioned. In the turtle painting I took a risk by adding the streaks into the background. Originally the background was just a solid blue, and after the class helped give suggestions, I realized it was too plane and boring. So I took a risk and added the streaks of different colors, and I really like how it turned out! Normally I'm afraid to do anything bold with paint strokes, afraid that it might not work out and ruin the painting, but I'm really happy with how this piece of art turned out. I tried to make the cactus painting unique by making the thorns on the cactus hearts (that was my first canvas). To break up all of the acrylic work I was doing I decided to do the yin and yang with sharpie, acrylic, and water color. I like the contrast of the black and white of the circle with the free flowing water color background.
Throughout the month of October, we did a portrait unit, a still life on an altered canvas, pottery, and blind contour. In the portrait unit I took a lot of risks. I originally began trying to do my portrait with a grid, and it wasn't looking as good as I had hoped, so I took a risk and ditched the grid and drew myself just by looking at a picture I had taken. I like how the portrait turned out and I think the risk was worth it. I also took a risk in the blind contour assignment. Drawing without looking down at my paper was a risk because I was unsure of what the final product would be, but I'm happy with the abstract feel to the images. I also developed skill during the blind contour exercise. I was training my brain and hand to not look down at the paper as I drew. I also developed skill while making the pottery bowl, because I tried a new technique I never have before- sgraffito.
In this unit, we really focused on the negative space of a composition. We started by drawing a still life image, and then we had to creatively think of a way to fill the negative space. I filled the negative space by paper macheing it with newspaper that I had water colored. This project really made the artist and whoever is viewing the work appreciate the negative space. In this unit I took risk because I had never focused on negative space so I was unsure of how to go about filling it. I also created original art during this project - no one else in the class took the same approach of watercoloring newspaper in order to fill the negative space.
