Throughout november we have been doing a pottery unit. In the slideshow above are some of my favorite pieces. Clay is formed from erosion of rocks. There are five stages to making pottery. Wet clay is the first stage and it is the most workable, leather hard is the second stage. If a piece of clay is leather hard it cannot bend but it can attach with the score and slip method. The third stage is bone dry, and the fourth stage is bisque. Once a piece of pottery is bisqued it is no longer clay. The last stage of pottery is clay. The materials needed for making pottery are a placemat, water, sponge, needle tool, and of course the clay. While working with clay I learned many rules, such as soft clay cannot be attached to hard clay and the pieces of clay must be scored with a needle (or brush) and painted with slip in order to be “glued” together. I also learned that clay cannot be thicker than one inch and hollow pieces must have a hole for air to escape. The unnatural binding will result in cracks when the piece of pottery is drying. I also found out that uncovered clay is drying clay and that you should keep it covered! The last thing I learned about clay is that it shrinks as it dries. Clay workability depends on plasticity which is the amount of moisture in the clay. During the pottery unit I developed skill by working with clay every day. I also created original art, there are no pieces that are identical to mine.
