During the span of a week, we took a day to work on a single prompt, and then at the end of the week for a final project we combined two aspects of our designs for a complete work of art. The five prompts that we were given were nuts and bolts, things with an on/off switch, industrial, things that turn, and nature. In response to these prompts I drew a heart filled with nuts and bolts, a light switch, a bunch of pipes, a bicycle, and a wave with a mountain behind it. For the final project of this unit I drew a windmill surrounded by flowers. This combined the themes of things that turn with nature, During this unit I took risks by drawing things that I typically never would have. For example I never would've thought to draw nuts and bolts. I also created original art, no one would have the same exact artwork as me, mine is unique. Overall I really like the surprise factor this unit had- never knowing what we were going to be drawing that day.

Over the last week we have been working with water colors. During this unit I made a watercolor "chart", octopus, and a hot air balloon. During this unit I created original art. I chose unique colors and images to paint. I also took risks by mixing certain colors and playing with color combination. This was my favorite unit so far!
Over the past week we have been working to replicate the work of Tromp L'oeil. L'oeil takes objects from everyday life and draws them flawlessly as he sees them. In my artwork I took supplies that I found from around the art room and tried to replicate them. I created original art in this process, because no one will have the same coloring or shading as me. I also took a risk, I have never drawn something by looking at a reference.
Over the past week we have been learning about the artist Wayne Thiebaud, and his style. Wayne Thiebaud was really into creating desserts such as cakes, cupcakes, slices of cakes, and gum ball machines. In order to try and capture the correct shading and the unique colors that Thiebaud was able to capture in his work, we used oil pastels. During this procedure I developed skill by trying to draw something I never had before. I also created original art, with unique colors and shading.
During the month of February we stated embroidery! Embroidery was actually my favorite unit that we have done all year. Faith Ringgold is a famous artist who was really into knitting and embroidery, we looked to her work when we first started. To make our first embroidery sampler we put the tan material (I forget exactly what its called) in between the hoop. Then we wrapped the embroidery floss around the plastic floss card. After that we put the embroidery floss through the needle. Once the floss was on the needle, it was time to start embroidering. Throughout this whole unit I developed skill because before we started I had no idea how to embroider. I also collaborated with my peers in order to learn certain stitches.
During January, we started printmaking. We first started off using the EZ carve, as a way to learn and get experience with printmaking. Then we worked our way up to using linoleum, which was what we made the finished stamp out of. Linoleum is a material that is easy to carve when heated by an iron. Linoleum is a material consisting of a canvas backing thickly coated with a preparation of linseed oil and powdered cork. After we applied heat to the linoleum we used carving tools to carve out the image of the final stamp. There were many different sizes of gauges that could be used depending on what size line that you want. After the carving was finished in order to transfer it to paper you had to put some ink onto a paper plate and then used a brayer to spread around the ink. The brayer is also used to put the ink onto the stamp. After the stamp is covered in ink you place it on the table ink side up and then out the paper on top of that ad using a device such as a spoon press the paper into the stamp. Once you pulled the paper away the stamp would be on the paper! I created original art when I created my stamp. I also developed skill all the way throughout the process.
Throughout november we have been doing a pottery unit. In the slideshow above are some of my favorite pieces. Clay is formed from erosion of rocks. There are five stages to making pottery. Wet clay is the first stage and it is the most workable, leather hard is the second stage. If a piece of clay is leather hard it cannot bend but it can attach with the score and slip method. The third stage is bone dry, and the fourth stage is bisque. Once a piece of pottery is bisqued it is no longer clay. The last stage of pottery is clay. The materials needed for making pottery are a placemat, water, sponge, needle tool, and of course the clay. While working with clay I learned many rules, such as soft clay cannot be attached to hard clay and the pieces of clay must be scored with a needle (or brush) and painted with slip in order to be “glued” together. I also learned that clay cannot be thicker than one inch and hollow pieces must have a hole for air to escape. The unnatural binding will result in cracks when the piece of pottery is drying. I also found out that uncovered clay is drying clay and that you should keep it covered! The last thing I learned about clay is that it shrinks as it dries. Clay workability depends on plasticity which is the amount of moisture in the clay. During the pottery unit I developed skill by working with clay every day. I also created original art, there are no pieces that are identical to mine. On Friday my art class and I went to the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and we were told to reflect on some of our favorite pieces.

I hear the water flowing I smell a mix of the lake water and grass I need a bathing suit! I am going to go stick my feet in at the water's edge I feel the long grass beneath my feet I want to go swimming! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dear Hailey, I am writing to you from the River Loing at Gréz, France. It is absolutely stunning here! I am sitting in the long grass as I am writing to you now, and when the wind blows the grass tickles my leg. It is extremely peaceful out here, it is nice to have a break from everyone once in awhile! The water is enticing, and after I finish writing this letter to you I think I might go for a swim! Hope you can make it down here sometime. Sincerely, Ella |
