This month we have been working on a portrait unit! We were tasked with creating a unique and creative portrait that expresses a purpose. I wanted to do something different than the typical acrylic paintings that I have been working on so far this year so I decided to make the background a newspaper collage. I cut out a bunch of different size pieces of newspaper and then macheed it onto the paper. When it came to the actual person I have in my picture, I wanted my artwork to be different from all of the other portraits in the room so I did a silhouette! Someone actually gave me this idea during a critique! During critiques we were collaborating about our artwork. Another artistic behavior I used this month was creating original art. Typically I have a reference image, but for this project I went completely on my own, and I’m really happy with how it turned out!

The silhouette is intriguing - who is she? I love the way it looks against your collage - great choice for the portrait project! At the MFA next week we will be seeing the work of an artist that works primarily with silhouette. Kara Walker's work explores race, gender, sexuality, violence, and identity and is very provocative!
